Elmshorn, 05 September 2016 – Whether fresh, extra strong or tangy in flavour, chewing gum is literally on the tip of everyone's tongue. But where does the popular chewy stuff come from and what can it do? star petrol stations have come up with seven bizarre facts about chewing gum and will be adding star GUM to their own-brand product range with immediate effect.
1. Chewing gum as a life-saver
Chewing gum can be crucial to survival in tricky situations: In 1911 the crew of a British plane managed to seal a hole in the engine's cooling system with several pieces of chewed gum, thus preventing a crash.
2. Get slim - as an "endurance chewer"!
Had no exercise today? When you chew gum you burn eleven calories an hour. So in 37 hours, "endurance chewers" can burn off the number of calories in a croissant – and get aching jaw muscles at the same time.
3. Chewing gum? Only on prescription!
Chewing gum has been banned in Singapore since 1992, for reasons of cleanliness and to combat waste. In 2004 the law was relaxed: Fans of the sticky stuff can now buy chewing gum from the chemist's, but only on presentation of a doctor's prescription and an ID card.
4. Don't cry – chew!
If peeling onions moves you to tears, you will often be confused by various tips and tricks that you can try to help you avoid tearing. Chewing gum helps too and, unlike a diver's mask on your nose, it does not look quite so strange.
5. Chew to relieve stress.
Stress is reduced by working the jaw muscles when chewing gum. The process also stimulates the metabolism, reduces hunger and helps with tasks that require a lot of concentration.
6. spelling the myth of the gummed-up stomach
"Chewing gum gums up your stomach" – a saying that every child has certainly heard. But swallowing chewing gum is normally quite safe. It is indeed indigestible but it is excreted with no difficulty.
7. Who invented it?
As long ago as 1871, American inventor Thomas Adams launched unflavoured chewing gum on the market. It was only later that some manufacturers experimented with various flavourings. For that reason, chewing gum is still called “Adams" in Iran to this day.
