Hand in hand for children with cancer

15-09-2015

Joint project between star petrol stations and THW Kiel gives young
cancer patients a new equipment room

Elmshorn, 15 September, 2015 – After three years working together for the benefit of patients in the children’s cancer ward at the University Medical Centre Schleswig-Holstein, star petrol stations and THW Kiel have reached an important milestone: With the 8,000 euros raised last season through the player partnership with THW professional Patrick Wiencek, an equipment room was officially
opened on 11 September.

Professional handball player Patrick Wiencek is not only passionate when on the court, as he also shows enormous commitment when it comes to social issues: The little patients and the staff on the children's cancer ward
at the University Medical Centre Schleswig-Holstein, Kiel Campus, celebrate every goal scored by his Kiel "zebra herd". Because for each goal in the Bundesliga, star petrol stations donate 100 euros. With his 66 goals during the last season, the 2.01 metre tall pivot was able to generate 6,600 Euros, which the star petrol stations rounded up to 8,000 euros.
On 11 September, during a visit to the children’s cancer ward, Wiencek and Wieslaw Milkiewicz, Managing Director and press spokesperson of star petrol stations, were impressed by the results of the partnership. With the
help of the 19,000 euros donated in total during the three-year collaboration, it had been possible to equip a room during the course of the renovation of the paediatric department. This room houses the equipment
financed over the past few years, which is used to support the mobility of sick children. "It is wonderful to see that with my efforts on the court, we can achieve something sustainable for the children here at the same time.
It continues to motivate me being able to help local young people, to make their days in the clinic happier and more active and, in doing so, contribute to their recovery," explains Wiencek, who signed autographs for his little
fans during the visit.
During the current season Wiencek is on the hunt for goals once again, in order to raise funds together with star petrol stations. "Over the past three seasons we have really been able to help with donations and now bring a
little bit of lasting colour to the children’s stay in hospital. This is why we want to carry on the collaboration and continue to show our commitment to this cause, which is very close to our hearts," explains Wieslaw Milkiewicz.
Assoc. Dr. Gunnar Cario, Assistant Director and Senior Physician at the Department of General Paediatrics, explains, "In the coming years we want to expand the range in the equipment room even further and buy more
equipment for our patients. It is great that we will continue to have two excellent partners with star petrol stations and Patrick Wiencek, who provide fabulous support. We will keep our fingers crossed and look forward to the new, high-scoring season."
