Hand in hand for children with cancer

09-09-2016

Sustainable commitment from star petrol stations and the THW Kiel success trio is creating mobility for young cancer patients
Elmshorn, 09. September 2016 – After four years of cooperation benefiting the young patients of the children's cancer ward at University Hospital Schleswig-Holstein (UKSH), the star petrol stations and THW Kiel have reached a new milestone: on 8 September, with the €10,000 raised last season thanks to the partnership with THW player Patrick Wiencek and his team-mates, new medical devices were acquired and the continuation of the current equipment room was secured for new construction at the UKSH.
The goals scored by star-sponsored player Patrick Wiencek during the most recent Bundesliga season 2015/2016 counted twice: for every goal scored by Wiencek, the star petrol stations made a €100 donation to the friends' association supporting the children's cancer ward at the UKSH Kiel campus. The national squad-member has unfortunately been out of action since the autumn due to a knee injury, but that didn’t signal an end to the thrilling action: by way of replacement, star petrol stations enlisted two other players as fundraisers for the season. Christian Sprenger and Igor Anic added to the total goals scored by the 2.01-metre-tall Wiencek for an overall donation of €10,000.

€29,000 have been raised over four years of joint action. This money has been used for the purchase of medical devices that support the mobility of sick children, for whom a special room was constructed. On 8 September, THW stars Christian Sprenger and Patrick Wiencek accompanied by star director and press spokesperson Wieslaw Milkiewicz surprised the children and were able to get an on-site impression of the results of their cooperation. A rowing machine and treadmill were ordered to expand the equipment fleet. "I am always motivated by the idea of bringing additional joy into the daily lives of young people in the hospital," says Wiencek, who spent time at the end of his visit signing autographs for his small fans.

In the new 2016/2017 season, Wiencek will once again be hunting for goals and raising donations along with the star petrol stations. "With our long-term commitment, we can truly help by bring joy into children's hospital visits. That's why we are continuing this successful initiative into its fifth season and beyond; this year we signed a sponsoring contract with THW for an additional three years. Most impressive this year is the autonomous engagement of the employees, who initiated under the supervision of one of their physiotherapists a weekly star training programme, where the children are able by using the medical sport devices to recover their fitness and mobility together", explains Wieslaw Milkiewicz. Prof. Dr. Martin Schrappe, Head of the Department of General Paediatrics adds: "Due to this planning certainty, we will be able to plan for a room for the equipment donated by star in the new mother-child centre at the UKSH building addition. The usability of the new room will be even better. This cooperation continues to surprise us and provides excellent perspectives for our patients."
