Elmshorn, 22 December 2021 – Children who require long-term treatment in hospital need courage, a sense of achievement, and exercise. The sport and exercise programme at the University Hospital Schleswig-Holstein (UKSH) helps children to regain their former strength, and gives the children in the cancer ward the chance to play and escape from everyday life during and after several months in hospital.
As a sports partner, ORLEN Deutschland has been supporting the Friends of the UKSH Foundation for many years together with the handball team THW Kiel. The sponsored player for this campaign is the exceptional handball player Patrick Wiencek. For every goal he scores in the top league, ORLEN Deutschland donates € 100. No small sum, considering he scored 83 goals last season. The management of ORLEN Deutschland has rounded up the donation of € 8,300 from Patrick Wiencek’s goals to € 10,000. "We were delighted to receive yet another generous donation for our children’s cancer centre here at UKSH in Kiel. It is, above all, the long-standing partnership that has allowed us to set up an extensive sports and exercise programme for our children and youths suffering from cancer, which is now an integral part of our therapeutic concept", explains Professor Dr. Gunnar Cario, Deputy Director of Children’s Hospital I and Head of the Department of Paediatric Oncology at UKSH in Kiel.
This year’s presentation of the donation has been delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. It also had to take place digitally rather than during a THW match as usual. A summary of the presentation of the cheque was shown on the video cube in the arena during the Bundesliga match at home on 22 December against TVB Stuttgart.
"The player sponsorship has been running since 2012. Together with THW Kiel and the UKSH, we have been able to achieve a tremendous amount for the sick children", says Waldemar Bogusch, Chairman of the Management Board of ORLEN Deutschland GmbH and its petrol station brands star and ORLEN. All ORLEN employees and petrol station partners keep their fingers crossed for Patrick Wiencek every season so that the centre back scores as many goals as possible. In the past nine years, donations totalling € 82,000 have been made for the children’s cancer ward.
