Elmshorn, 9 July 2018 – Holidays mean travel: according to a recent survey, around 18 million people in Germany drove by car on holiday in the past year*. But a long drive can put a strain on the holiday coffers. star petrol stations reveal how drivers can save fuel and thus cash while on the road.
1. A proper way of driving brings efficiency
Avoiding jerky accelerating, shifting up a gear early and driving with foresight can save on petrol by between 10 and 20 percent. Keeping your speed as constant as possible also helps to keep consumption low.
2. Luggage belongs in the boot
As a general rule: Luggage should be stowed inside the car and in the boot. Luggage on the roof increases wind resistance and consumes around two extra litres of petrol per 100 kilometres. Bicycles on the rear of a car do not increase fuel consumption as much as they do on the roof. Once they arrive at their destination, car drivers can also save on fuel by unloading their vehicle completely and removing bicycle carriers and the like.
3. Adjust tyre pressure to the load
If tyre pressure is too low, it consumes up to one percent more fuel. But be careful: an unloaded car requires a different tyre pressure to one that is fully packed with bag and baggage. That's why it's worth checking tyre pressure just before the journey when all luggage is on board. The correct values for the load in question can be found either in the fuel tank cap or in your vehicle manual.
4. Low-viscosity oil reduces friction
Car drivers can also save on fuel by using the right oil: With so-called low-viscosity oil, friction is reduced in the engine – as is consumption. The engine should be warm when the oil level is checked. If the oil level is between the two marks on the dipstick, enough oil is available.
5. Check fuel prices before the journey and save twice with star
Car drivers can compare prices before they travel and look for cheap petrol stations on their route. The star petrol station finder on star.de assists in this, and always shows the current prices at the stations. In addition, ADAC members save twice with star starting now: in addition to cheaper fuel in any case, ADAC members enjoy an additional discount of one cent per litre.
