Back to life: star petrol stations support children with cancer through sport therapy

13-11-2020

Elmshorn, 16th of  October 2020 Children who require long-term treatment in hospital need courage, a sense of achievement, and exercise. Sport and the physiotherapy programme at the University Hospital Schleswig-Holstein (UKSH) help children to regain their former strength, and give the children in the cancer ward the chance to play and to escape everyday life after several months in hospital.

As a sports partner, star has been supporting the Friends of the UKSH Foundation for many years together with THW Kiel. The sponsorship player behind this campaign is the outstanding handball player Patrick Wiencek. For every goal he scores, ORLEN Deutschland donates €100. No small sum, considering he scored 54 goals last season. The management of ORLEN Deutschland generously rounded up the donation of 5,400 euros achieved by Patrick Wiencek's goals to 10,000 euros. This year's donation will allow for the purchase of additional fitness equipment for the physiotherapy room in the new building of the UKSH. "We are delighted to have this renewed support for our children's cancer ward at the UKSH. We endeavour to provide our children with not only the best medical treatment, but the best comprehensive care. An integral part of this is the sport and exercise programme," explains Dr Cario, Deputy Director at the UKSH paediatric clinic.

The handover of the donation was delayed this season due to the coronavirus pandemic. This normally takes place during a break in a match. This time the cheque was delivered directly to the UKSH. A camera crew filmed the whole thing so that the film of the cheque handover can be shown on the video cube in the hall during the match on Sunday.

"The star player sponsorship has been running since 2012. Together with THW Kiel and the UKSH, we have been able to achieve a tremendous amount for sick children," explains Waldemar Bogusch, CEO of ORLEN Deutschland GmbH and its petrol station brand star. He and all of the employees and petrol station partners keep their fingers crossed for Patrick Wiencek every season so that he can score as many goals as possible. Over the past eight years, he has chalked up overall donations of €72,000 for the UKSH with THW Kiel.
