Biking to the petrol station: star and Westwind Hamburg collect for those in need

30-04-2021

Successful donation campaign at star stations in and around Hamburg will take place for the fourth time in 2021. More than 120 roadworthy bicycles were collected last year.

Elmshorn, April 29, 2021 – What should you do with your used bikes? If you don't want to simply dispose of your roadworthy bicycle, you can bring it to selected star petrol stations in and around Hamburg from the beginning of May to the end of September. Old bicycles will be collected at a total of nine collection points and donated to a good cause. The non-profit organisation Westwind Hamburg e.V. restores the bikes to a roadworthy condition for their new owners. With the joint donation campaign, the star petrol stations want to help providing more freedom of movement to those in need.

At star, it means taking a two-wheeler instead of a four-wheeler to the petrol station – last year more than 120 bicycle donations were collected this way. The latest collection campaign is now starting in collaboration with Westwind Hamburg e.V. "After a total of 440 bicycles have been donated over the past three years, it only makes sense for us to continue the campaign. With the donations, we would like to make our contribution to the mobility of the people of Hamburg and help those who cannot afford a bicycle,” explains Waldemar Bogusch, CEO of ORLEN Deutschland GmbH and its petrol station brand star. "We look forward to improving the quality of life of those in need through this campaign." This new-found mobility gives them the opportunity to take part in public life in a big city, to meet friends, or just to move and get some fresh air.

As a small thank-you, all donors will receive a little surprise directly at the star collection points, like a repair kit, a bell, a lamp, or reflective tape for their own bike. More information about the promotion at: https://www.star.de/aktuelles/westwind-aktion/

Westwind Hamburg e.V. provides bicycles to those in need
Since its founding in Hamburg in 2015, the Westwind organisation has played a central role in the region, supporting people in need with bicycles as a means of transport. With over 2,750 donated bikes since the organisation was founded, Westwind shows that the project of giving bicycles to people in need, in exchange for a small fee, makes an important step towards integration. Around 30 volunteers from all over Hamburg restore the bikes to road-ready condition.

People in need can contact Westwind Hamburg directly via email at warteliste@westwind- hamburg.de and must provide evidence of a social security notice or refugee ID. Due to the currently very high demand, there may be longer waiting times. More information at: www.westwindhamburg.de
