Five years of sponsorship: Joint commitment to children with cancer

Elmshorn, 20th September 2017 – For the fifth year in a row, star petrol stations and record champions THW Kiel committed themselves to the young patients in the children’s cancer ward at the University Medical Centre Schleswig-Holstein (UKSH). With the 10,000 Euro raised last anniversary season by the player partnership with THW professional Patrick Wienck, the ward’s self-erected equipment room can be expanded.
The goals scored by star-sponsored player Patrick Wiencek during the most recent Bundesliga season 2016/2017 counted twice: for every goal scored by Wiencek, the star petrol stations made a €100 donation to the friends' association supporting the children's cancer ward at the UKSH Kiel campus. The pivot’s goals collected a total donation of 10,000 Euro after rounding up.
A total of €39,000 has been raised over four years of the joint initiative. This enabled the construction of an equipment room with medical devices to help children with mobility. On 19th September, THW star Patrick Wiencek and star Director and press spokesperson Wieslaw Milkiewicz surprised the children of the UKSH, and were able to see the finished results of their partnership. This year, a medical treadmill and smaller devices were purchased to expand the equipment park. In addition, the fitness programme, which was launched under the ward staff’s own initiative, is supported by the donation. “To know that my goals can help young people is a great motivation”, said Wiencek, who at the end of the visit wrote many autographs for young fans and gave out the presents that he had brought with him.
In the new 2017/2018 season, Wiencek will once again be going for goals and raising donations along with star. In 2016, the partnership between star and THW Kiel was extended for another three years. “It moves us to see how our long-term commitment can bring some lasting colour to children’s hospital stays. Mobility plays an important role for the young patients, and we are very pleased that we can help the children to regain their mobility with the financed equipment and their own initiated fitness program,” explains Wieslaw Milkiewicz. Prof. Dr. Martin Schrappe, Director of the Department of General Paediatrics adds: “The partnership provides excellent perspectives for our patients. The long-term commitment gives us planning security and thus, with regard to our move, in around two years, we can plan a space in the new building for devices donated by star, which we can make even better use of.”
