From the concert hall straight to your living room: “star” to make digital Chopin concerts accessible for all

23-07-2020

Elmshorn, 26th of May 2020 – With the corona crisis affecting public life, there is often no room for cultural experiences. As such, this year the 3rd Chopin Festival in Hamburg has been postponed until the spring of 2021. In a bid to allow friends of Chopin to still enjoy classical music, the Chopin Society Hamburg & Sachsenwald is instead digitally taking the concert straight to people’s living rooms. This has also been made possible by the main sponsor ORLEN Deutschland and its star petrol stations. The first concert to be aired will be by pianist Sijia Ma at KAWAI Hamburg’s Shigeru Lounge on 29th of May 2020 at 20.15 via live stream (https://www.chopin-hamburg.de/live/).

ORLEN Deutschland, the subsidiary of the top-selling Central Eastern European group PKN ORLEN from Poland, is strongly involved in cultural events and especially in the promotion of young musicians. The company has also been the main sponsor of the Chopin Festival in Hamburg since last year. “We consider classical music to be an important part of culture – something we cannot and do not ever want to be without. Therefore, we promote outstanding musical performances and the culture surrounding classical music,” explains Oskar Skiba, Managing Director of ORLEN Deutschland GmbH and its petrol station brand star.

“The new format of livestream concerts is aimed specifically at addressing younger generations in particular. An important goal of ours is to inspire them with this music.”

The fact that Chopin was a Polish composer from the country of ORLEN Deutschland’s parent company makes him all the happier. Likewise, he is delighted to have internationally renowned pianist Sijia Ma starring in the first digital Chopin concert. As a soloist and chamber musician, her refreshingly light touch has left audiences enchanted in many countries across of Europe and Asia. Sijia Ma won her first competition at the age of nine and has gone on to win many other prizes. She has performed at major festivals such as the Mozart Festival in Warsaw as well as the Chopin Festival and Érard Festival in Hamburg.

She has put together a special programme for the digital classical music experience on 29th of May, during which she is set to perform F. Chopin’s Andante spianato et grande polonaise brillante in E-flat major Op. 22 and 4 Mazurkas Op. 41 (no. 1 in E minor, no. 2 in B major, no. 3 in A flat major, no. 4 in C sharp minor) and J. S. Bach/F. Busoni’s Adagio from Toccata, Adagio, and Fugue in C major, BWV 564.
