Groundbreaking ceremony for new multimodal service station in Salzgitter-Watenstedt

23-04-2026

• ORLEN Deutschland is building the modern, conveniently located facility on the premises of Salzgitter AG
Future-focused infrastructure for cars with classic internal combustion engines as well as for electric vehicles

Construction has now officially begun on a project in Salzgitter-Watenstedt that brings together the challenges of automotive mobility today and in the future. On a plot of land owned by Salzgitter AG, ORLEN Deutschland GmbH is building a modern, conveniently located service station that, with its broad range of offerings, will serve both passenger-car and truck customers while also focusing on a future-ready energy and charging infrastructure. In future, drivers of electric cars as well as owners of gasoline- or diesel-powered vehicles will be able to meet their energy needs here.

In the presence of Salzgitter’s Lord Mayor Frank Klingebiel, Gerd Baresch, Technical Managing Director of Salzgitter Flachstahl GmbH, Christian Heinrich, Authorized Signatory of Salzgitter AG and Managing Director of Glückauf Immobilien GmbH, as well as Dennis Kulbach, Chief Operating Officer of ORLEN Deutschland GmbH, the first groundbreaking for the construction project has now taken place. Completion and opening of the facility are planned for December 2026.

The new station will operate under the star brand and will be developed on a partial site area of around 12,000 square meters, featuring a modern service-station shop including an expanded food-service offering and an inviting outdoor area. For fuel supply—including HV0100 diesel as an alternative, non-fossil option—six passenger-vehicle pumps will be available in future. Customers will be able to refuel around the clock: a fuel vending machine with an integrated payment terminal (CRID) enables 24/7 operation. In addition, two high-performance truck fueling points, so-called fast lanes, will be built and can also be used 24/7. Further services such as truck parking spaces, a car wash with two additional self-service wash bays, as well as a customer shower are also planned. Thanks to a modern PV system, the station will be supplied in part with self-generated, sustainable electricity.

E-mobility is also an integral part of the new-build concept. Electric-car owners can look forward to an ORLEN CHARGE charging hub with eight charging bays. Four hyperchargers will enable ultra-fast charging with up to 400 kW charging power. The charging infrastructure is being developed in cooperation with WEVG Salzgitter GmbH & Co. KG and Avacon AG.

“We are delighted that, as Salzgitter AG, we can be part of this future-oriented project and that we have been able to get it off the ground with such outstanding partners,” says Gerd Baresch, Technical Managing Director of Salzgitter Flachstahl GmbH. “The new service station is being built at a conveniently located site in Salzgitter-Watenstedt, so that once completed all prerequisites for successful operation will be in place,” adds Christian Heinrich, Authorized Signatory of Salzgitter AG and Managing Director of Glückauf Immobilien GmbH.

“The project in Salzgitter-Watenstedt shows what is possible through strong partnerships. Together, we are creating a modern service station that meets not only today’s needs but also future mobility requirements, including a powerful high-power charging offering for electric vehicles. The site is therefore a key building block in ORLEN Deutschland’s strategic network development,” says Dennis Kulbach, Chief Operating Officer of ORLEN Deutschland GmbH.

Lord Mayor Frank Klingebiel is proud that this infrastructure measure for modern mobility is being implemented in Salzgitter: “The multimodal service station is a forward-looking joint project in and for our city. It provides pioneering charging infrastructure for passenger cars and trucks using different energy sources for propulsion. With the offering of fast charging bays and the availability of HV0100 diesel, the profile of the future station is clearly geared toward modern, CO2-saving drive systems. In short: a major gain for our city!”

Through its subsidiary Glückauf Immobilien GmbH, Salzgitter AG has carried out the land-use and development plan procedure. The aim is to develop new innovative and future-oriented supply strategies for Salzgitter and to build a supply portfolio on Salzgitter AG’s land for employees and companies (e.g., logistics) in the Salzgitter-Watenstedt industrial area, as well as for all residents and visitors to Salzgitter.

About ORLEN Deutschland GmbH
ORLEN Deutschland GmbH was founded in March 2003. It is a 100 per cent subsidiary of the Polish multi-energy group ORLEN S.A. and part of the international ORLEN Group. The company currently operates over 600 ORLEN and star filling stations on the German market. ORLEN Deutschland GmbH, based in Elmshorn, is one of the ten largest filling station operators in Germany and is involved in a wide range of sports and cultural sponsorship activities (e.g. handball, winter sports, music festivals).

In keeping with the claim “Moving forward together”, ORLEN and st
ar filling stations offer high-quality fuels as well as their own shop products at an attractive price-performance ratio. ORLEN Deutschland is increasingly focussing on the expansion of electromobility offerings, alternative, sustainable fuels and the environmentally friendly use of resources. Customers receive additional services such as car washing, ATM and package services at many stations. Filling stations with 'star café' and 'stop.café’ invite customers to take a break in a feel-good atmosphere and offer coffee specialties throughout the day, a wide selection of food, as well as hot and cold snacks.

ORLEN S.A. further expanded its market position in the DACH region at the beginning of 2024 with the acquisition of Turmöl fuel stations. With over 260 stations, ORLEN has a market share of around 10% in Austria, making it one of the three largest owners of fuel station networks in the country.
