Less waste and 3,000 euros for education measures and research into microplastics


Elmshorn, 11 June 2018 – Coffee is a particularly popular drink to enjoy on the go. Yet around three billion single-use cups are disposed of per year, causing considerable environmental damage. During "European Sustainability Week" from 30 May to 5 June 2018, star committed itself to an environmentally friendly coffee culture and made an active contribution to reducing waste, in line with the EU's plan to reduce plastic refuse.
Since April, the petrol station brand's range has included a high-quality star multi-use cup made of stainless steel. The environmentally friendly alternative to conventional single-use coffee cups for people who are on the go not only makes an active and sustainable contribution to reducing environmentally harmful waste. During the campaign period, star also donated one euro to the German environment organisation "One Earth – One Ocean e.V." for every star multi-use cup sold. This organisation has set itself the goal of reducing plastic waste in the world's oceans. With almost 3,000 cups sold, star petrol stations rounded up the amount before handing it over to the charitable organisation.
Around 140 million tonnes of plastic waste are already floating around in oceans globally – and about eight million additional tonnes of rubbish ends up in the world's seas each year. With its "maritime refuse collection" concept, the association “One Earth – One Ocean” aims to rid bodies of water worldwide of plastic waste. The money donated by star will be divided between various projects. National and international education work on the topic of ocean waste and waste avoidance will be supported, alongside research into microplastics in the organisation's laboratory in Kiel. In addition, the donated amount will be used for clean-up campaigns by the waste collection ship "Seekuh" in Asia.

"So we are all the more delighted that our multi-use coffee cup has proven such a big hit with our customers and that, together with them, we can make an important contribution to protecting the environment and nature."
Affordable and high-quality – star's multi-use cup
star's multi-use cup is made of high-quality, stable stainless steel and is ideal for use on the go. It is leak-proof, suitable for dishwashers and has a capacity of 0.4 litres. The cup costs EUR 5.90, including two speciality coffees, at star petrol stations. At each subsequent visit, the coffee is put straight into the cup – with a price saving of 10 cents. This makes the star cup a genuine alternative to single-use cups. Every buyer can use it to make a cost-effective but valuable contribution to protecting the environment.
