More mobility for everyone - star petrol stations and Westwind Hamburg e.V. collect bicycles for those in need

02-04-2019

Seven new collecting points are set up at star petrol stations in Hamburg and the surrounding area

Elmshorn, 1st of April 2019 – Just in time for spring cleaning, selected star petrol stations in Hamburg and its surrounding area will become collecting points for used bicycles from April 2019. Anyone wishing to donate their old, but still functioning bicycle for a good cause, can drop it off there. The bikes will then be made completely roadworthy for their new owners by the non-profit organisation, Westwind Hamburg e.V. Through a long-term cooperation with the organisation in the form of an increased number of collecting points and an extended collecting time frame of six months per year – from spring cleaning to autumn – star petrol stations want to help those in need to become more mobile.

Their first successful joint initiative in 2018 reached over 100 bicycles donated in just one week and received prominent support from national and THW Kiel handball player, Patrick Wiencek. This year - star together with Westwind Hamburg - is involved with an even bigger and longer bicycle collection initiative for a good cause. “The good joint results from last year showed us that we can do even more for the region when we intensify our cooperation and more strongly integrate our branch network with our petrol station partners as collecting points. For this reason, we have increased the donation time frame from a single week to six months”, explained Waldemar Bogusch, CEO of ORLEN Deutschland GmbH and its petrol station brand star, regarding the expanded new commitment starting this year. “At the same time, we have now increased the previous number of collecting points from one to seven, all of which are easily accessible throughout Hamburg and its surrounding area. In addition to these collecting points is, of course, the central collecting point of Westwind Hamburg itself.”

The collection points in and around Hamburg

From more than 30 star petrol stations in the region, the seven stations with the largest collecting areas are taking part in the joint project. Bicycles can be donated from 1st of April until 30th of September during opening hours at the following locations (see petrol station finder at star.de):

star petrol stations in Hamburg:
• Baumeisterstraße 4
• Berner Heerweg 407
• Neuwiedenthaler Straße 131
• Kieler Straße 206

star petrol stations in the surrounding area:
• Neu Wulmstorf: Hauptstraße 20
• Uetersen: Jahnstraße 13
• Elmshorn: Köllner Chaussee 98

Central collecting point at Westwind Hamburg e.V.:
• Rindermarkthalle St. Pauli car park, Neuer Kamp 31. You can donate bicycles here every Saturday throughout the year from 4:00-7:00 pm, in the blue Westwind container.

The star petrol stations reward donors with a small surprise for more safety and energy on their return journey
As a thank you for their commitment, donors receive a reflector band at the collecting point. They also receive a star brand product for free, such as naturally cloudy sparkling apple juice or the new mini salami twin-pack for sharing, as a refreshment for the journey back home.

ORLEN Deutschland and star petrol stations became involved in this social initiative as there are many people in Hamburg who cannot afford a bicycle. This is not just a question of limited mobility and quality of life for those affected. Another consequence is that many children are not learning to ride a bicycle properly and that fewer and fewer school children are ready for road traffic.*

Westwind Hamburg e.V. supplies bicycles for those in need
Since its founding in Hamburg in 2015, the non-profit organisation Westwind Hamburg plays a central role in the region by supplying socially disadvantaged people with bicycles as a means of transport. “Bicycles are an ecological means of transport that provide mobility and enable social participation,” says Carmen Wilckens, CEO of Westwind Hamburg e.V. With over 2500 bicycles donated since the organisation was founded, Westwind shows that their project of supplying bicycles to those in need, quickly and free of charge, makes an important contribution to integration.

Approximately 30 volunteers from all over Hamburg ensure that the bicycles are made roadworthy again. Westwind combines the bicycle repair work with an educational opportunity for young people. The goal is to give them the chance to discover their potential and to get to know the work environment in a bicycle workshop. In addition, the organisation offers student internships, in cooperation with general and vocational schools, and also organises bicycle tours and bicycle courses for adults. In order to maintain its work, the organisation is dependent upon volunteers and donations and is equally pleased about both.

How those in need can get a bicycle
Those in need can register directly with Westwind Hamburg and be placed on a waiting list. An email sent to warteliste@westwind-hamburg.de is sufficient. A social insurance notification or a refugee card is a prerequisite. Further information can be found at: www.westwindhamburg.de
