New perspectives for a long-standing partnership: star and THW Kiel visiting the clinic of the future

30-09-2019

Elmshorn, 26th of September 2019 – star petrol stations and the handball record holder THW Kiel’s commitment to the paediatric cancer ward at the University Hospital Schleswig-Holstein (UKSH) is now in its eighth year. One month after the opening of the new facility, THW player Patrick Wiencek and star’s CEO Waldemar Bogusch visited young patients in the newly completed clinic of the future. They also visited the new fitness centre, whose equipment was financed by donations from star, and admired the proposed artistic designs for its wall murals.

For the past seven years, star petrol stations have donated 100 Euro for each goal scored by pivot Patrick Wiencek to the UKSH Friends and Sponsors’ Association for the Children’s Cancer ward at the UKSH Kiel. Over 60,000 Euro has been raised so far. With this money, medical equipment was gradually acquired, and now the two star fitness and training rooms have been equipped for physical therapy to aid the children’s mobility. In addition, the now three-year-old UKSH star fitness program “Rückkehr zu alter Stärke” (“Regaining strength”) is led by a physical therapist whose work is also funded by these donations. Adventure-based learning excursions to help give patients the courage for life after their illness round out the clinic’s services.

During a tour of the new facilities with Patrick Wiencek and other representatives from the star charity programme, THW Kiel, and UKSH, focus was on the two large physical therapy rooms in the children’s ward, one of which has been set up exclusively as a fitness centre. “The visit to the clinic and especially today’s insights have shown me how much we have been able to accomplish together. At the same time, I’m even more motivated to continue scoring as many goals as possible”, said Patrick Wiencek, who happily signed autographs for the young fans. Waldemar Bogusch added: “With the opening of the new clinic, Kiel is not only playing in the handball Champions League but also in the medical Champions League. It’s clear to see how much thought the UKSH representatives put into the new facilities to provide an ideal environment for the children’s healing process. The unique design concept, with colourful wall murals and views of the water and nature, certainly contribute to recovery. We were particularly impressed with the design proposals for the wall murals in the fitness centre that honour our partnership with THW Kiel. These new perspectives strengthen our desire to continue our long-standing commitment into the 2019/20 season, and we look forward to seeing the finished artwork next year.”

The donations from star were provided primarily to equip the new star fitness centre at the UKSH Children’s Clinic, which was presented by the deputy director of the Clinic for Paediatric and Adolescent Medicine, Dr. Gunnar Cario. “With the opening of the new facility last month, we have significantly more space available”, he explained. “We look forward to acquiring more equipment with additional donations to be able to develop and expand our physical therapy program, “Rückkehr zu alter Stärke”, components of which we will provide during therapy in the future. Mobility, strength, and fitness are key to our young patients’ recovery.”
