PKN ORLEN as a green energy leader and a guarantor of energy security in Central Europe

14-03-2023

Elmshorn/Warsaw, 14 March 2023 – PKN ORLEN is releasing its updated strategy for the period up to 2030, reflecting the increased importance of security and risk mitigation in the context of the war in Ukraine.

Two years ago, the ORLEN Group became the first multi-energy group in Central Europe to set ambitious decarbonisation targets. Now, the company is speeding up its course. In its updated 2030 strategy, ORLEN envisages increased investment in renewable energy sources, state-of-the-art petrochemical plants, increased biogas production volumes, and an attractive supply of alternative fuels, including a significant increase in the number of charging stations for electric vehicles, particularly in Germany.

The transformation of the ORLEN Group into a multi-energy group is already paying off. Integrating different business areas that hedge each other under the umbrella of a single organisation helps to increase resilience. Such stable resilience, combined with a solid financial base, results in direct access to cutting-edge technologies and the ability to carry out multi-billion-dollar investment projects. With these capabilities, ORLEN sees itself in a position to successfully cope with the macroeconomic changes and other challenges caused by the war, as well as the demands of the energy transition.

“The energy crisis, which began even before the war in Ukraine, has demonstrated there is no turning back from the energy transition. ORLEN has long recognised that. Back in 2020 we were the first company in Central Europe to announce a strategy to achieve carbon neutrality and a few months later – our vision for growth to 2030. This ambitious yet realistic plan is paying off today. We have built a leading energy company in CE, generating today over EUR 20bn in quarterly revenue, capable of spending roughly EUR 9bn on investments annually. Our strength is reflected in the upadated strategy. Mergers with other oil&gas companies in Poland (LOTOS and PGNiG) carried out in 2022 will allow us to double investment expenditures compared with 2020, to EUR 70bn by 2030, of which as much as 40% has been allocated to green projects. That will help us reduce reliance on fossil fuels. By delivering the strategy we will be able to reduce fossil fuel consumption and generate stable profits that we want to share with our shareholders,” said Daniel Obajtek, PKN ORLEN’s CEO and President of the Management Board.

In the mobility sector, PKN ORLEN aims to consolidate its position as a leading supplier of a broad range of energy products on the Central European market. The updated strategy foresees an expansion of the fuel station network to 3,500 locations and further investments in the energy of the future, including, in particular, low-carbon fuels and electro mobility. In particular, the plans for electric mobility have been intensified: ORLEN intends to implement an ambitious international electromobility strategy focusing on the Polish, Czech and German markets, which includes the construction of over 10,000 charging points. In Germany alone, almost 900 charging points are to be set up over the next three years. By 2030, it is expected to be up to 3,000.
