Scoring goals for children with cancer: a new step towards a common future

With the help of THW Kiel, the star petrol stations are providing the new equipment and fitness room for young cancer patients of the UKSH and visit the new construction project.

Elmshorn, 27 August 2018 – star petrol stations’ and handball record champions THW Kiel’s commitment to the Paediatric Cancer ward of the University Medical Centre Schleswig-Holstein (UKSH) is entering its seventh year. THW player Patrick Wiencek and star Managing Director and Press Officer Wieslaw Milkiewicz visited the young patients at the start of the Handball Bundesliga season 2018/19. They also visited the new building at the hospital of the future with its new facilities for fitness and machine training, which are financed by donations from star.

For the past six years, the petrol station brand has donated 100 euros for each Bundesliga goal from star player Patrick Wiencek, with donations going to the UKSH Friends and Sponsors' Association for the benefit of the Children's Cancer ward on the Kiel Campus of the UKSH. The action has generated approximately 52,000 euros to date. The money has been used to gradually purchase medical equipment and set up the star equipment and fitness room to promote the mobility of children. In addition, for the last two years, the UKSH has developed a star fitness programme called “Return to Former Strength” (Rückkehr zu alter Stärke) under the direction of a physiotherapist, who is also funded from the donations.

The current equipment room, however, offers limited space. The new construction at the UKSH will help add capacity. This year’s donations have funded a sports project, which includes individual physiotherapy sessions, and a socio-pedagogical team entrusted with caring for the children. This includes adventure-based learning trips, which educator Annette Petrauschke undertakes with former patients as well as with current patients to help them prepare for life after their illness.
A tour of the large new construction project led Patrick Wiencek and other representatives of the star petrol stations, THW Kiel, and UKSH past the two large physiotherapy rooms in the area of the children's wards. One of these can exclusively function as a gym. “The visits to the clinic and, above all, the impressions I’ve gained today motivate me even more to keep on performing and score as many goals as possible", says Patrick Wiencek, who was busy signing autographs for the young fans. Wieslaw Milkiewicz adds: “The construction project clearly shows how much thought the UKSH managers have put into the new premises to support their desire to create an optimal environment for the children's healing process. Light-flooded rooms with individual room concepts and views of the cruise liners will certainly aid the recovery process. This new perspective encourages us to continue our long-standing commitment.” The donations from star will be used in particular to equip the new star Gym at the UKSH Children's Hospital, which Deputy Director of the Department of Paediatrics and Adolescent Medicine, Prof. Dr med Gunnar Cario, presented in the new building. “With the opening next year, we will have significantly more space available”, he explains. “We look forward to receiving new equipment with more donations and continuing our ‘Return to Former Strength’ programme. Mobility and the rebuilding of strength and fitness are very important for the further recovery of our young patients.”
